J & G Lines rocking horse

Circa 1890

39"

In its day this handsome chap was considered a top of the range model - when we started to clean him up we found scraps of fur under his saddle which means he was originally covered in hide for a realistic effect.

This particular horse is in very good condition aside from his unfortunate paintwork, harness and missing eyes. He has the classic early Lines shape, as he dates to about 1885-1890, and has the very desirable turned head. Jules' stand is partially restored and once paint was removed we found the patent stamp is intact.

He will be restored to a dapple-grey similar to what he might have been like if he was not hide covered, but as he never had gesso and paint this will not strictly be a restoration. As an alternative, he can also be cleaned back, given traditional dapples over woodgrain and polished with beeswax for a natural, rich woodgrain finish. Something different! Either way Jules will be a beautiful heirloom after restoration, with a gorgeous dished head and serene expression.
